Cool but brightening (6-11°C) with longer days and fewer tourists. Arthur's Seat turns green and the Royal Botanic Garden awakens. A good time for castle visits without queues.
The warmest season (14-16°C) and culturally the most exciting. The Edinburgh Fringe in August is the world's largest arts festival. Long Scottish twilight extends evenings.
September retains summer warmth (13°C) after the festival crowds disperse. Autumn colours on Calton Hill and in the Pentlands are beautiful. October is crisp and atmospheric.
Cold and dark (4-6°C) with short days but incredible atmosphere. Edinburgh's Hogmanay is one of the world's great New Year celebrations. Christmas markets at Princes Street Gardens add warmth.
