Fushimi sake district
The Fushimi ward south of central Kyoto produces 40% of Japan's sake, and the Gekkeikan Okura museum offers tastings and tours of a 17th-century kura (storehouse).
Mount Kurama to Kibune hike
A 90-minute forest trail connects the Kurama temple (reachable by Eizan Railway) to the riverside village of Kibune, where restaurants serve nagashi-somen noodles in flowing water in summer.
Higashiyama preservation district
The lanes between Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine are lined with wooden machiya, ceramic shops, and tea houses, best explored before 09:00 when day-trippers arrive.
Nara day trip
Japan's first permanent capital, 45 minutes by train, has 1,200 free-roaming deer in Nara Park, the massive Todai-ji temple, and the Kasuga-Taisha shrine with 3,000 stone lanterns.

Pontocho alley
A narrow, lantern-lit alley running parallel to the Kamo River that is packed with small bars, riverside dining terraces (kawadoko), and occasional geiko sightings.
